Stone pelting on police-MCD team in Delhi at midnight; had reached to remove illegal construction near Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque; 5 policemen injured, 5 miscreants arrested. This action was taken near Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque located at Turkman Gate near Ramlila Maidan. And violence broke out during anti-encroachment drive near Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque in Delhi’s Ramlila Maidan area on Tuesday night. And after that some people threw stones at the policemen, due to which those 5 policemen were injured. This whole matter started when a post on social media claimed that the mosque was being demolished during the anti-encroachment drive.Soon after, several people gathered there, and some threw stones and glass bottles at the police and MCD staff.
Police fired tear gas shells to disperse protesters on Tuesday night. Five rioters, including a minor, have been detained so far. MCD Deputy Commissioner Vivek Kumar said that a diagnostic center, a banquet hall, and shops were demolished during the operation. The mosque was undamaged. Security forces have been deployed throughout the area.The area is being cleared by loading debris into trucks. Simultaneously, the Delhi MCD arrived with 17 bulldozers to remove encroachments. People pass through the area amid the encroachment action. The management committee of the Faiz-e-Ilahi Mosque has challenged in the Delhi High Court a December 22, 2025, order of the Delhi MCD, which stated that the structures built on 0.195 acres of land outside the mosque are illegal and will be removed .The MCD says that no documents of ownership or legal possession of the additional land have been presented. The MCD order was issued on November 12, 2025, based on the High Court’s Division Bench’s directives. The Division Bench’s order mandated the removal of approximately 38,940 square feet of encroachment from the Ramlila Ground near Turkman Gate, including a road, footpath, a marriage hall, parking, and a private clinic. Furthermore, the mosque committee maintains that the land is Waqf property and that it pays lease rent to the Waqf Board. “We have no objection to the removal of encroachments,” the MCD said. On January 6 itself, the Delhi High Court had issued a notice on the petition challenging the order to remove encroachment ( maraat ghar and diagnostic centre) from the land adjacent to the mosque and graveyard. The court has sought a response from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), Ministry of Urban Development, Delhi Development Authority, Delhi Waqf Board and other departments in this matter. Justice Amit Bansal had said that the matter is fit for hearing. All the parties have been directed to file their response within 4 weeks. The next hearing will be on April 22.
