The parliamentary panel said that after 1971, the biggest challenge will be from Bangladesh. The Parliamentary Committee on Foreign Affairs, chaired by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, described the current situation in Bangladesh as India’s biggest political challenge since 1971. The interference of Islamic fundamentalists there, Pakistan and China, is a strategic factor in Bangladesh’s development. The BNP, Jamaat, and several other organizations have organized more than 10 marches to the Indian High Commission since August 5, 2024. National Citizen Party leader Hasnat Abdul said at a rally in Dhaka on Sunday that if attempts are made to destabilize Bangladesh, retaliation will spread across its borders. He then added, without naming India, that if you are giving shelter to those who destabilize us, we will also give shelter to the separatists of the 7 Sisters. The committee says that the situation will not turn into chaos but India will have to handle it very carefully. The committee has made several important recommendations to the government. It has also explained that a solution can be found only by cooperating in the development of Bangladesh.

The main reasons behind the unrest in Bangladesh are the rise of Islamic fundamentalism and the increasing influence of China and Pakistan and the weakening of the political hold of Shokh Hasina’s Aam Aadmi League. The committee said that the challenge of 1971 was related to existential and humanitarian crisis, whereas the current situation points towards a generational change, change in the political system and strategic distancing from India.
